The first German attacks on the highway position had resulted in the loss of the southwestern corner for the rangers. At the command post on the eastern corner the situation was confused and the officers had little or no knowledge about what was going on west of them. However, various reports stated that the right flank was overrun and decision was made to withdraw north if necessary. Unfortunately, this plan was not passed along the entire line and parts of the defenders had not received word of it.
the final German attack came at 0300 and hit the defender from the south and west. German forces struck directly at the center of the main defensive line, broke through Company E's position and rolled down west along the road. Another push attacked the command post directly from the south but was stopped in its tracks by intense fire from B.A.R. rifles.
The rangers were forced to withdraw in some disorder as parts of the force carried out the plan for withdrawal while others remained at their position. The men of Company D, which had received no message about the plan, stayed in their foxholes widely spread along 250 yards of road. they were soon surrounded by Germans and waited until the next day, hiding in foxholes and the thick vegetation of the hedgerow.
