Securing the northern flank

Map of the Foucarville area

The northern causeways leading inland from Utah Beach were to be secured by 502d Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. Until early noon exit #3 and exit #4 were reported clear and the paratroopers concentrated on consolidating their position. A group of 45 men was sent out to set up a road block at Foucarville in order to defend the northern flank of the division.

By noon four road blocks had been established on the route leading from St. Martin-de-Varreville north towards Cherbourg and west towards St. Mere-Eglise. Shortly thereafter a german convoy was trapped and destroyed.

But still the paratroopers' position was threatened by enemy forces occupying the high ground to the north and west of the road. During the day German troops made several attempts to clear out the road. But although the road blocks were not heavily defended the German counterattacks were without success. Moreover during the following night more than hundred Germans surrendered or fled. They had outnumbered the Americans about three to one but were deceived by the sheer firepower of heavy weapons brought down on them.

Foucarville Scenario Setup

Deployment

The US player places his units anywhere in the six foxholes which constitute the road blocks (marked on the map as white stars). Troops can be divided among the foxholes in any fashion and not all road blocks have to be occupied. The US player deploys all of his units before the Germans enter the table.

The Germans enter the table via one of the two roads to the north and north-west. The German player may split up his force in two groups. Decide which units enter from which direction before the US set up. The Germans automatically win initiative for the first turn.

Forces

Unit German US
Command Rifle 2 3
Command SMG 2 -
Rifle 5 5
SMG 2 -
Assault Rifle 2 -
LMG 2 2
Flamethrower 1 -
Hvy. Mortar 2 -
All German units are rated Trained
The paratroopers are rated Elite

Objectives

The paratroopers have to defend the road blocks at all costs. The Germans have to breach the American defenses. They win the game if they manage to either destroy all opposition (destroyed or broken at the end of the game) or by seizing all six road blocks.

Duration

The Game lasts for 7 turns

Victory conditions

The Germans win if they destroy all American units or if they capture all six road blocks. To "capture" a road block the German player must move at least one unbroken unit next to it (base to base contact). It is perfectly okay to capture a road block by just passing it during movement. A road block occupied by an American unit (broken or unbroken) cannot be captured. In all other cases, the Paras win.
