In war there is no prize for the runner-up.
- General Omar Bradley
Generally, the purpose of a gun is to fire at the enemy. But as life goes, it is very likely that your guns are themselves subject to enemy fire. With bullets flying around their heads, your gun teams will be of dramatically decreased effectiveness. The following chapter tells you how to handle fire on gun teams in Final Round.
When firing at a gun, troops are actually aiming at the crew. This is the most important thing to keep in mind when working out shots at gun teams. Simply use the normal shooting rules described in Infantry Combat and allocate hits to the gun crew.
The gun as such cannot be allocated hits and cannot be targeted by the enemy. The gun crew will be treated as an infantry team and rolls a normal infantry save.
| 2D6 | Crew is... |
|---|---|
| 2-5 | ...destroyed |
| 6-8 | ...broken |
| 9-12 | ...saved |
| +1 | target is Elite |
| -1 | target is Conscript |
| +1 | soft cover |
| +2 | hard cover |
| +1 | target on higher ground |
| -1 | target sprints (manhandled gun) |
| -FP | Firepower of attacking weapon |
| +2 | gunshield |
| +3 | emplaced |
Saves for gun crews are equal to those for normal infantry teams; additional modifiers are highlighted. Note that the crew might also have sprinted if it just occupied the gun.
A gunshield provides hard cover against attacks from the front arc. Any attack that would normally negate cover also negates the gunshield. The front arc is 180 degree to the front and is used for the gunshield-rule only. Note that the gunshield is not cumulative with any other kind of cover.
Guns may start a game being dug in in an emplacement. The scenario description will tell whether and which guns are emplaced and where they can be positioned. Guns cannot dig in during the game.
Emplaced guns may not move and their crew receive a +3 modifier on their saving throw. This modifier is not cumulative with any other kind of cover or a gunshield. Attacks that normally deny cover modifiers also deny the modifier for being dug in.
Although the crew is always the primary target, some weapons will be capable of destroying the gun as well. If a hit from a weapon with a firepower of '1' or higher is allocated to the gun team (gun & crew) the gun might be destroyed.
If the crew's (modified) saving throw results in its instant destruction, the gun is destroyed as well. Any other result ("Broken" or "Saved") leaves the gun intact. If the crew is destroyed because it was already broken and breaks a second time, the gun remains intact as well.
If a gun is hit by a weapon which has a gun class of medium or heavy the gun will also be destroyed on a modified saving result of "Broken" or "Destroyed".
